Brazilian voting machines running under linux

Last weekend I worked in the Brazilian Municipal Elections that happened on 5th October. My job was to transmit all votes from the city I was, to the main data center in the capital. While doinig my things, there was people testing all the machines, and I realised that there was a pinguim on the booting screen. So I made some research, and discovered that the voting machines have its own distro, running on kernel 2.6.16.57 and using some open libraries like SDL, zlib, boost, jpeg, freetype and others.

The government decided to change the OS from VirtuOS and Windows CE from 430k electronic voting machines to linux, decreasing expenses a lot! Way to go linux! =)

OpenOffice 3D

It looks PowerPoint will have a great competitor now. People will start thinking twice before paying for Microsoft’s Office. Programmer Shane M. Mathews made great slideshow effects using 3D-OpenGL’s library.

Campus Party Brasil 2008

Right now on São Paulo is happening the Campus Party Brasil, it’s the biggest entertainment event that started back in 1997. During seven days, millions of people come with it’s own computer from everywhere and willing to exchange curiosity, share knowledge and do everything related to computers, community and tech things.

I wish I was there, but for sure, next time I will be, and make a good review of it!

New Theme for Ubuntu 8.04 Deferred

It seems that the totally new default theme for ubuntu that was going to be released in the Hardy Heron version has been deferred to the next release (8.10) that will be out on Cctober.

You can take a look at the some theme concepts that can be found in the Ubuntu Artwork Wiki. And take a look at one of the most popular theme, Gelatin, made by a Brazilian.

Ubunt 8.04 won’t have a totally new visual style (but they will change somethings), but they said that’s because ubuntu developers want to focus on news features and improvements.

I personally prefer to have system improvements then visual themes, even that I like theming my Ubuntu. Some of the new things on the next ubuntu version:

Auto Detection of Monitor Frequency

Xorg 7.3 (This feature missed the Gutsy Gibbon deadline)

Better and more robust hardware detection

Handling Full Disks

Dual/Multi Monitor Support (Currently you have to manually tweak Ubuntu if you want to use more than one monitor)

Deleting duplicate libraries

Easy File Sharing

Better Desktop Effects

Funny Story: User don’t believe Linux can run without Windows

“You are kidding arent you ?”
Some really clever windows user, made a funny but sad post on ZDNET’s forum saying that Linux can’t run on any computer without Windows underneath it.

Or you can just read below:

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?


That sounds preposterous to me.
If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.
Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.
Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

This is one of the funniest things I’ve read in some time!

While Ubuntu 7.10 is still quite new, you can already take a look on some ideas about how the next version of this amazing OS will look like. I can’t wait until the next release, I believe this time it will come with so many new things, and surprises!

Today is the day many people were waiting for. Ubuntu 7.10 codename Gutsy Gibbon was released, with several improvements. Ubuntu for those who don’t already know it, it’s a Linux Distro for Humans, which means that even you who don’t know much about computers can use it. It’s totally free and runs on Pcs and Mac. So if you are up to the challenge, you can Download the .ISO file from here, request by mail or just upgrade.
